Romance through the ages

Romance through the ages

The 1920s, '30s and '40s graced us with so many fashion icons: Greta Garbo, Katherine Hepburn, Bette Davies, and Jean Harlow; all women who would go on to inspire some of today's biggest bridal designers, from the lavish frills of Ian Stuart to the country-vintage designs of Claire Pettibone.

One thing is for sure though: anyone can wear a vintage inspired design. If you picture yourself as a bit of a 1920s flapper girl on your wedding day, this look has an emphasis on women who have a slight, slender shape. The sleek gowns are shaped like tunics, and some have intricate detailing on a low-slung waist and panelled skirts. Brides looking to reflect the 1920s era should finish their look, just like couture designer Lindsay Fleming has, with pretty detailed headdresses adorned with feathers, and strings upon strings of pearls.

For more information on the perfect vintage wedding gown, see pages 44 - 46 of the current issue.

Seduced by Tahiti

Seduced by Tahiti

There are so many paradise islands around the world, but one particular group - the Tahitian archipelago - fascinates me the most. It isn't just the enticing turquoise waters and still lagoons protected by coral reefs, or even the white sand beaches and dramatic landscapes shaped by volcanoes, waterfalls and lush rainforests.

BORA BORA - romantic ISLAND

Bora Bora is definitely not one to be missed. Reputed to be the most beautiful island in the world, it is protected by a coral reef and has many secluded beaches. An exciting start to this journey is landing on a runway on an islet or motu. From here, hop on a boat to reach the main island to peruse the interiors on a jeep, then take a boat trip to explore the lagoons.

I'd love to hear from you
I'm so excited. I was bemoaning the fact that I haven't been to a wedding for ages, when what should pop through on my mobile, but a message from one of my good friends Clara saying that she will be tying the knot in December this year.
As well as the obvious congratulations, my return message contained excited offers of help and the big question: where? With a matter of months to organise what will be a fantastic day, I was relieved to hear that the church has already been booked, and that she and her fiancé are currently on the search for their ideal venue. I just know she'll love some of the glorious gardens we've got in our sights on in this issue.

Hopefully the second part of our venue searching series will help our undecided readers at least choose between urban and rural.

Enjoy!

Our wedding day: Miles and Charlee

Our wedding day: Miles and Charlee

It was never going to be a conventional event when Miles and Charlee got married in July last year, and their hippy geek do made for a really personal day.

Miles, 31, and 29-year-old Charlee harboured secret feelings for each other for over a decade before a summer beer festival in 2007 provided the Dutch courage for them to admit they both wanted more than just friendship. "We were casual friends for about 11 years and liked each other for most of that time, but we were neither single at the same time nor brave enough to ask each other out," remembers Charlee.

We both wanted to eschew a traditional wedding ceremony and go for a much more relaxed, open air event. We first visited Ote Hall in spring last year and we knew straight away it was the perfect place for us. The manor house and grounds were breathtakingly beautiful, even on a rainy day.
The first time we visited, the owner, Carola, told us we could have pretty much anything we wanted, including a bouncy castle. There was plenty of space for everything, and lots of gorgeous places for photographs.

For more information and pictures of Miles and Charlee's hippy-geek wedding, see pages 31 - 37 of the current issue.

In an English country garden

In an English country garden

As our thoughts turn to spring and the warmer weather that awaits, we take a look at some of the county's venues that offer a glorious garden.

The Walled Garden at Cowdray, Midhurst

Those readers who found themselves lost in the magical world of Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden can recreate that enchantment, albeit in a far more cultivated way, at The Walled Garden at Cowdray. Just like in the book, an old oak door leads to the garden, which was also in need of some tlc before the current owners got their green fingers on it. What they have created is a Tudor beauty with herb and flower borders, a central lawn and water features making a highly pleasing environment for newlyweds' celebrations.
The gardens are at their best between May and September. Civil ceremonies take place in the Courtyard Room.

Wedding of the Year 2010

Wedding of the Year 2010

A new year, a brand new title up for grabs.

Last year our Wedding of the Year competition was a huge success - readers from all over the county entered for their chance to be crowned with the title. So this year we've decided to run the competition again with a great new prize.

Throughout the year, we'll be looking for couples whose Sussex-based weddings have taken place in 2010. Every issue we'll reveal the shortlisted couples, and readers can vote online for their favourite. The winner of each issue will go through to the final, which will be held in spring next year.
Any newlyweds can enter the competition: it doesn't matter whether the wedding was large or small; modest or spectacular.
Remember, it's the readers who vote, and determine who ends up in the final - and ultimately who wins.

If you'd like to put your wedding forward, visit
