Sunny weather and an ice cream van set the scene for Lucy and Kavan's fun and nostalgic nuptials
Lucy and Kavan crossed paths in unexpected circumstances. "I had been off work because of illness, and my cardiologist encouraged me to take gentle exercise, such as walking my grandfather's dog around Burnham Beeches," says Lucy. "It was when I took my grandad for a walk there that I first met Kavan at his coffee shop in April, 2009. He used to serve my grandparents ice cream."
The couple's first date was when they took their dogs out for a walk near the beautiful grounds of Cliveden. "Kavan treated me to an ice cream," says Lucy. Just four months after they first met, Kavan proposed marriage. "Kavan drove me to Burnham Beeches at sunset and then popped the question."
"We found Taplow House by chance while we were driving around on a rainy day in January. As soon as we entered the hotel we felt it was the right venue for us. It was grand but had a relaxed, warm feel to it. Taplow House's wedding coordinator, Melissa, was amazing. Nothing was too much trouble, and despite our having to change the date three times, the team was very accommodating and understanding."
"Kavan is very passionate about ice cream and has his own café and ice cream business, which of course made it easy to organise the ice cream van for the day."
"I loved our fantastic cake toppers, which were made by Boogie Babies. The table names were all named after various ice creams, with the top table being 'Mr Whippy'!"
"I wanted a simple, classic style for my bouquet, and because our colour scheme was fuchsia, I chose pink roses adorned with diamantés. I discussed with my florist what I wanted for the floral décor in great detail, then left it to her to create the look. The blooms were amazing and a lot of guests commented on how beautiful the arrangements were."

Ribbons and brooches
"I always ask couples to choose two words to describe the feel of their day. It could be 'vintage and romantic' or 'bright and quirky'. It gives me a clear idea of the look they want for their cake." Hester Gardner, Sweet Tiers Cakes
"Consider the décor and type of lighting you will have in your venue. A dark-coloured cake in an 'old world' type of setting will disappear into the background of oak panelled walls. You have paid good money for your cake, so you want it to take pride of place and be appreciated." Jane Endean of The Cake Fairy
When to order your cake: "As a general rule, start looking around six to eight months prior to your wedding. If it is a cake maker who works alone or a particularly popular company that you prefer, you may need to book earlier to avoid disappointment. If you are getting married over the holidays, such as Christmas or New Year, be aware that some cake makers are either closed at this time of year or will add an extra cost to your bill." Hester Gardner, Sweet Tiers Cakes

As an imminent newlywed my thoughts are currently all things wedding and I can really empathise with our real brides as they describe the trials and tribulations of planning their big day. The 'to do' list only seems to get longer and the budget only seems to get bigger - although I really am spoilt working for the region's leading bridal magazine, I have fresh inspiration at every turn!
With my big day just around the corner I am starting to finalise all the smaller details, from favours to seating plans, transport to timings - it's a daunting task. However, don't feel too proud to ask for help if things are getting on top of you; it's perfectly acceptable - and normal - to delegate tasks to the bridesmaids, mother-of-the-bride and the groom.
The one thing only you can decide on, however, is the dress, so make sure you choose a gown that feels right for you. Take a peek at our feature on floral fashion, which is a great way to make a style statement. And when it comes to lasting memories of your big day, some of the region's finest photographers provide inspiration in a wide range of styles, while cake designers impress with their tempting creations.
After the excitement of your big day, your attention turns to that much-awaited getaway. But don't worry if your budget doesn't quite stretch to long-haul destinations - Rowena Marella-Daw recommends some intimate places in the UK where you can escape to in our honeymoons pages.
Happy reading

| Wedding of the year - Congratulations Sarah & Alan |

Meet the lucky winners of the first round of our Wedding of the Year competition. Sarah and Alan Milliner were married on 9th April, 2011 at Horwood House in Buckinghamshire. Sarah talks us through the highlights of their big day.
How did you both feel when you found out you had won this round of the competition? We never thought we would win, so we were both really surprised and excited.
Why did you decide to take part in the competition? Our wedding photographer Kate Everall nominated us for the competition, which was a really lovely gesture.
If you could go back and do it all again, is there anything you would change? Everything about our wedding was perfect and there is not a thing we would change. The day went by so quickly though, and we wish we could have made it last longer.

Your wedding photos are the most precious and lasting memories of your big day. Get inspired by beautiful images snapped by some of the region's photographers
Tips for the bride and groom Lenka Jones: "Each and every bride looks absolutely beautiful on her wedding day, so we always tell the couple to enjoy every minute of their nuptials and not to worry about anything."
Kate Everall: "Keep an open mind and learn to trust your photographer. A professional will know how to pose you so that you look your best."
Maria Ashby-Giles: "Your photographer is part of the day, so it's important that you get on with them on a personal level. You can look at a photographer's portfolio online, but it is only by talking or meeting with them that you can truly assess if this is someone that you would like to be part of your wedding."

Many of us take a peek at our horoscope each month and the predictions can feel uncannily accurate. If you want to see what the heavens have in mind for your wedding plans, read on for some top tips from popular astrologer Russell Grant.
Air
Russell says: "The air signs, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius will want a spiritually satisfying ceremony but nothing too traditional. Brides that fall under this sign live in the moment and might go for a light-hearted and fun theme to match their personality. They like the idea of saying their vows while jumping out of a plane or during a hot air balloon ride. The reception will be as informal as the wedding, with everything flowing smoothly but with many spontaneous moments."
Water
Russell says: "For the water signs, Cancer, Pisces and Scorpio, a horsedrawn carriage or vintage wedding car will add elegance to their big day. Expect the bride to focus on her wedding vows, which will be as beautiful as the love she shares with her groom. The bride will opt for a gown in soft, shimmery fabrics that ripple like water as she walks down the aisle. Better still will be if the vows can be exchanged at the seaside."
Earth
Russell says: "The earth signs, Taurus, Capricorn and Virgo, are likely to go for a more formal wedding, mixing elegant details with glamorous décor and traditional elements. From the invitations to the catering, everything will be planned with military precision - nothing will be left to chance. Their ideal wedding will be in peaceful and idyllic surroundings."
Fire
Russell says: "The fire signs, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius will prefer outdoor wedding venues either in parkland locations, the grounds of a country house or even on a mountain top. Guests will be able to help themselves to a variety of hot and cold food from a delicious buffet, while live music and entertainment will get everyone up on the dancefloor until the early hours of the morning."
