Boutique hotels are not just for romantic getaways. From a former brewery or prison to a quirky townhouse, these intimate settings can also provide plenty of character and attitude for a modern wedding.
Plenty of Attitude
Don't just judge a venue by its façade, particularly when it comes to boutique hotels like The Forbury, a member of the von Essen hotels metropolitan set. Expect instead to be pleasantly surprised by the stark contrast between the building's traditional exterior (it was once the Berkshire County Council's Shire Hall, erected in 1911) and its eclectic interior. Inside, a chandelier with 86,000 Italian beads spans the height of the building's old lift shaft; there's a 30-seat cinema room with Italian leather seats; and furnishings are made of vibrant colours, fine fabrics and unusual patterns. The Forbury lends itself perfectly to intimate and exclusive wedding celebrations.

Rianna Fry Editorial assistant County Wedding Magazines
I love flicking through our wedding titles and discovering all the quirky ideas our brides come up with. There are so many aspects of weddings that I adore, but the following is a selection of Your Berks & Bucks and Your Hampshire magazines' 'best bits' of the year. Narrowing down my final favourites was difficult, but I kept coming back to the image of Amna's mendhi. The henna detailing is stunning.

I'm so excited. I was bemoaning the fact that I haven't been to a wedding for ages, when what should pop through on my mobile, but a message from one of my good friends Clara saying that she will be tying the knot in December.
Clara's lucky - she knows exactly the type of venue in which she wants to celebrate her marriage (actually, we've been discussing it since last summer, well before her festive proposal!), but not everyone is so clear. Hopefully the second part of our venue searching series will help our undecided readers at least choose between urban and rural.
Elsewhere this issue, fashion editor Kerry takes a look at men's shoes for all wedding styles.
Enjoy!

They say love is sweet so what better way to evoke the sentiment than in your wedding theme? Laura Binder looks at candy colour schemes...
With spring upon us I can't help but think of pretty pastel tones for wedding days. But, to stand out from the crowd, why not add a tasty touch to the season's colours with a candy twist? Couples can stick well within budget by creating economical yet eye-catching centrepieces: large glass bowls or tall jars filled with retro treats like flying saucers, sherbet lemons, marshmallows and lollipops look devastatingly sweet and tables can be named after them too. Indulging in all things candy is also a great option for those with children on the guest list, and works just as well for adults - after all, who doesn't have a taste for old school treats?
For more information on how to create the perfect candy colour scheme, see page 49 of the current issue. |

A beautiful historic setting and plenty of humour set the mood for Megan and Jon's big day.
Megan Powell, 31, and Jon Batty, 32, were married at Notley Abbey in Thame on 21st August, 2009.
Early days
Megan and Jon first met through friends at a birthday party six years ago, but didn't see each other again for some time. However, when they bumped into each other at a mutual friend's wedding, romance blossomed. "Our first date was to a kebab restaurant in Willesden. When Jon walked out of the tube station to meet me, it was 'love at first date'," says Megan.
Mystical setting
The couple exchanged vows and held their reception at Notley Abbey. "We fell in love with the abbey for its beauty and amazing history," says Megan. "It is a restored 13th century building with beautiful surroundings, and the venue was available for our exclusive use. The staff organised everything very well, and were also flexible and accommodating when it came to making changes to the menu. They even created a dessert specifically to order. It was delicious."

You are the stars of your big day, so make sure the videographer captures those precious moments with style and panache.
With so many elements to put together, weddings have become more like a major stage production. So when it comes to documenting the day's events, it's worth spending the time, effort and a reasonable portion of your budget on finding a professional videographer - one who can masterfully create a movie that reflects the true sentiments and mood of the day.
The digital age
In the old days, weddings were filmed with a mute, flickery 8mm cine recording with people mouthing 'good luck!' and granny dancing to a silent band. At least it was in colour. These days we're talking digital, so expect no less than slick editing and transition effects, surround sound and HD (high definition) resolution. The possibilities are endless, thanks to sophisticated digital video cameras and high-end editing programmes. If you're feeling more adventurous, they can even be made to look like a mini Hollywood production. But at the end of the day, it's all down to the videographer's skills and talent to turn your big day into a cinematic gem you will be proud to watch in many years to come.
For more information on videography for your big day, see pages 33 & 34 of the current issue. |
