Deep purple hues and a black-tie dress code ensured Emma and Simon's wedding was a plush affair...

Emma and Simon first met five years ago, at a bar in Clapham Junction. "For our first date we went to Wimbledon for lunch and then took a drive into the Surrey countryside where we found a spot at the top of a hill and watched the world go by," remembers Emma. "It went really well and we have been together ever since."

Simon proposed to Emma in a boutique hotel in Oxford on New Year's Eve, 2007. "After dinner he took me into the courtyard area of the hotel which was decorated with fairy lights, a table with a bottle of champagne on it and two chairs," she says. "I knew at that moment he was going to propose and so I started crying".

I tried on six different dresses before finding the right one. The one I eventually chose was very figure-hugging, plus I like my shoulders and the sweetheart neckline accentuated their shape even more. I purchased it from London Bride and Groom - the ladies in the shop were fantastic. My shoes were a pair of purple Christian Louboutin's, which I bought because I didn't want to spend a lot on shoes I would only wear once. They also matched the colours in my bouquet.

Top tips
I'd love to be a dab hand with a camera. However, I really am no photographer and even the most basic point and click digital is beyond my mastering; the results rarely make it off the camera, let alone into a picture frame. So it was with interest that I read the tips on page 109 explaining how to make the most of wildlife photography while on honeymoon.

But this hasn't been the only revelation for me this issue, thanks to Lisa Morgan's wine guide. While I do enjoy a glass of dry white, I'm no sommelier and it's certainly given me more idea about choosing wine to complement food. If you're about to embark on the tricky task of finding the perfect wedding tipple, I recommend checking out page 66.

Happy planning

Bring out the socialite in you and return to the heady, indulgent days of a bygone era, says Laura Binder...

If there's one day to go all out on, it's the big day. So, if ideas of grandeur are filling your wedding fantasies, don't rein them in, embrace a bout of sheer indulgence and take inspiration from the British Regency's high society.
This era was all about powdered wigs, silky satins and frivolous aristocracy, all of whom had one aim: pleasure. But, to make this devilishly delightful look work in 2010 you don't need a budget to rival British nobility. If your venue is a stately home or historic house you've got a match made in heaven. However, it's just as easy to give plain marquees an extravagant overhaul with a few choice details.

For starters, adorn your tables with the finest cutlery, crystal glassware and matching china - try vintage hire for an economical option. For flowers, think flamboyant. "Back then arrangements were all about frilly, romantic blooms in pastel hues," floral expert Sarah Holland tells me. "If couples want to replicate this period, they should ask florists for gladioli, snapdragons, lilac, and garden style cabbage roses." I say plump for over-sized feathers in powderpuff shades too, for an irresistible touch of decadence. Fans and parasols are oh-so-ladylike - perfect on summer dates - so why not give female guests one each for favours?
