Charlotte and Chris celebrated a sophisticated wedding on 3rd December, 2011, at the Aviator Hotel

Charlotte and Chris spent their first date with good food and great company at Italian restaurant, Zizzi. "It went very well," remembers Charlotte. "However, Chris was ill and driving that evening so I was the only one who had a bit too much to drink."

Chris popped the question in September, 2010, while the couple were on holiday in Venice. The proposal took place at the steps of the Rialto Bridge before they went to dinner. After a brilliant evening, they ended the night with a romantic gondola ride. "It was a complete surprise," says Charlotte. "I think friends and family were expecting it more than me!"

The happy couple knew they didn't want a traditional day and booked their wedding for December 2011, at the contemporary Aviator Hotel. Charlotte found the easiest elements to organise were the bridesmaids' outfits and deciding on the general theme of the day. Although, she did find the guest list and table plan quite tricky to arrange.

Charlotte tells us more about their special day on page 30 of the current issue.

With more than a decade's worth of experience, Kelly Nicolle of Elky May has worked with brands such as Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier to develop their make-up trends and now works with brides-to-be to help create their ideal bridal look. Kelly says, "I take my knowledge of working with leading brands to create mood boards with the bride to formulate the look she wants to achieve for her big day. It's also a great advantage for me to work closely with the venue stylists. Not only does this help set a focus for the design of the entire wedding, it is vital in helping the bride achieve a make-up design that is completely harmonious with the theme of the wedding."

A time for family
Despite writing about weddings for a living, I still get excited when an invitation comes through the door, and this spring my lovely sister is due to tie the knot. From the colour scheme to the entertainment, it's been fun helping her plan all the details. I have also been surprised that, considering it is a civil partnership, they still want all of the traditional elements. They both want to wear wedding dresses, walk down the aisle, be given away and have a wedding breakfast with all the trimmings.

It has really highlighted to me the meaning of marriage; no matter who you are saying the vows in front of, family and friends means the same. You are preparing to commit your life to the person you love.

With this in mind, the feature on wedding ceremonies in this issue is a fantastic read. From Hindu to Buddhist, we take a look at the important traditions each religion follows.

Happy planning,

Danielle Harvey, Editor

Veils are the cherry on the top of the whole bridal ensemble, and there's a special design to suit everyone

Style to suit
The variety of veils on offer is endless; do you opt for one with subtle sparkle to catch the light, one scattered with pearls or crystals, or something plainer? And then there's the length; should it be long, medium or short and how many tiers is too many? Here, Sharon Bradford from The Bridal Room offers her top tips to help navigate you through the daunting task of choosing the perfect veil.

1 Choose your dress first. You need to take into account the style and detail of the gown you have chosen. The simpler the design, the more elaborately decorated your veil can be, whereas a more detailed ornate dress calls for a plainer style.

2 Don't choose a veil that cuts across any details at the back of your dress. The veil should finish below the embellishment.

3 Choose a veil that is the same shade as your gown. It should enahnce the dress, not clash with it.

4 Petite brides should try to avoid fingertip veils that usually end mid-thigh, as this would make them appear shorter by visually cutting their legs in half.

5 Two-tiered veils suit most brides because they are fuller and will frame your face on both sides.

6 An elbow length veil perfectly complements a dress with a full-skirt.

7 Long veils are very much back in style. A floor or cathedral length veil can create a romantic look.

8 Try on lots of different lengths and fabrics - your bridal shop should be happy for you to try on all of their veils.

Worth the wait?

Q
We have heard stories from our friends that they have waited for months to receive their wedding images. On average, when should we expect to receive the first proofs, and then the final album?

A Jake Peet says: I always get first proofs, in the form of a private online gallery, to the newlyweds within two weeks. I have to allow time for other work coming in, and of course, any editing and post-production - and usually the couple are on honeymoon anyway. I politely ask clients to give their final decision on images, choices for albums and page layouts, within three months.

For more expert advice on timings for your big day see page 97 of the current issue.
