Food & wine... a perfect marriage

Food & wine... a perfect marriage

Getting the food and drink right is an important aspect of your big day, so make it a memorable feast with creative ideas and tips from the county's caterers.

Matching food and wine

"Couples can get very concerned about which wines to serve at weddings, but if you follow a few general rules, you can't go wrong," advises Alison.
"In terms of food and wine matching, serve light foods with light wines," says Alison.
"For example, fish works well with sauvignon blanc, while heavier foods such as roast beef will need a full-bodied, more tannic red wine such as shiraz or cabernet sauvignon. Chicken or salmon in a cream sauce works particularly well with the roundness of a chardonnay.
"Another simple rule is to think about the origin of the food and which wine the natives would choose to accompany it. For centuries, the locals in Sancerre in the Loire Valley have enjoyed the perfect marriage of Sancerre with a goat's cheese starter."

Then and now
My parents recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary. Keen to snoop into their life in 1959 BC (Before Children) I got out their album and scrutinised the pictures. Other than my nana's hat making me smile, what I did notice was that the style of my mum's wedding dress didn't look as dated as my cousin's '90s getup in the photo sitting on my parents' bookshelf. Out of this observation came a feature idea, and on page 47 we take a look at weddings over the past 50 years.

Elsewhere, Portsmouth and Hayling Island find themselves in our venues spotlight, while those who appreciate stately homes will be interested in the venues we've highlighted on page 15.

Happy reading!

Give your locks some much-needed pampering before the big day, with a break in The Cotswolds courtesy of celebrity hairstylist Stuart Holmes.

Top hairstylist Stuart Holmes relocated from London to Cheltenham in 2003, where he established his luxurious hair and beauty salon with his wife Sara. After the move, many of his clients started to regularly travel from London for their appointments so Stuart decided to team up with two of the area's most exclusive hotels to launch the Hair Holiday package. This enables clients to make a relaxing weekend of having their hair done and enjoying some pampering too. Over the past six years the Stuart Holmes Hair and Beauty Spa has gone from strength to strength and now employs 20 professional staff.

Lighter-than-air fabrics, delicate detailing and billowing volume. Perfect dresses for summer weddings.

In the warmer months shorter and lighter gowns are by far the easiest and most comfortable choices. But that's not to say brides who have been dreaming of wearing a princess-style gown, can't. Volume is back this season, but rather than heavy satin and enormous petticoats, brides should be opting for softer materials like chiffon, tulle and organza. "We're seeing lighter, flowing gowns that have movement and an air of casual elegance," says bridalwear designer Claire Pettibone. "This season's designs are reflecting a more relaxed and intimate style of wedding. Soft mermaid silhouettes and sheathing fabrics are both popular."
The Greek goddess look is also a chic choice for summer, so choose dresses made from sumptuous slipper satin for a luxurious feel. Or for something with a bit of an edge, why not show off some leg with a shorter style?

For more summer gown ideas, see pages 75-78 of the current issue.

Chocolate & Cream

A retro Volkswagen van, lots of chocolate, and a romantic setting in the New Forest were just some of the highlights of Hannah and Daniel's summer wedding.

Early days
Hannah and Daniel met at university and remained friends for a couple of years until she went to America for a year as part of her degree. "I didn't expect to see Dan again when I returned to the UK, as he was in the year above me and had already finished his studies," says Hannah. "However, during the first week of my final year, I spotted Dan walking down the street, so decided to run after him to say 'hi'. The rest, as they say, is history."

New Forest gems
The couple got married at Beaulieu Abbey. "It is a lovely small country church next to a river, with a beautiful courtyard at the rear," says Hannah. More significantly, it is situated opposite the site where the couple got engaged.
The couple fell in love with Rhinefield House as soon as they laid their eyes on it. "It's right in the heart of the New Forest and the building and gardens are stunning - perfect for drinking Pimm's on the lawn," says Hannah.

For more information and pictures of Hannah and Daniel's big day, see pages 26 - 30 of the current issue.
