| Our big day: Rachel and Nicky |
| |
 |

Rachel Mattison and Nicky Baxter met at a friend's house party in 2003 and arranged a trip to the cinema together shortly after. While the film they saw didn't stay in their memory for long, their date certainly did and the couple were together for seven years before Nicky popped the question. "I'd always said I'd find a Christmas Day proposal a bit cheesy, so Nicky asked me to marry him as soon as we woke up on Boxing Day. We had discussed getting married before but I was still very surprised," recalls Rachel.
The couple set a date of January, 2011, and it took them a year to plan the nuptials. "We knew almost everything we wanted from the start so it didn't take me too long to plan the wedding," says Rachel. "I'm not usually the most organised person but I really loved finding bits and pieces that I could pull into our big day." Rachel and Nicky decided to have a rock'n'roll theme for their celebrations and added colour to the occasion with striking blue details. "I like to think that our wedding was traditional but with a luxurious, rock edge."
The Andaz Hotel on Liverpool Street was selected as the venue for Rachel and Nicky's big day and the couple were very pleased with their choice. "The staff at the venue were so accommodating that it made organising the wedding such a pleasure. Nothing was too much trouble for them, from helping us to hire navy blue linen to helping Nicky deliver the cake to the hotel the day before the wedding."
Rachel and Nicky were married on 15th January, 2011. Turn to page 47 of the current issue for Rachel's account of the big day. |
| Be inspired.. Art deco delight |
| |
 |
| |
Slip into a flapper-style dress and kick up your heels to Charleston around the room at your art deco-inspired reception. Taking your cue from the glamorous age that spanned 1925 to 1940, create a shimmering space with decor in pale blue and silver shades to complement a stately home venue. A grand hotel boasting a ballroom adorned with glittering chandeliers would also be a fitting setting and a decadent, party atmosphere is definitely key for this theme.
Entertainment should be a priority for couples influenced by all things deco and a jazz band will help you get into the swing of the celebrations. Tunes by Duke Ellington and Cole Porter are sure to set the tone during the wedding breakfast and confident guests can attempt an energetic quickstep in the evening, while a romantic foxtrot would be perfect for your first dance. If you would rather simply observe the classic choreography, hire a professional dance troupe to wow the crowd and perhaps even teach loved ones a few steps too.
Ensure your centrepieces are the cat's meow by selecting delicate birdcages strewn with pretty blooms, sparkling gems and luxurious feathers - peacock plumes are particularly authentic. Food and drink should enhance the indulgent mood and whether you prefer sophisticated champagne or speakeasy-style cocktails, whoopie pies are a fun accompaniment to tasty beverages. Ask guests to place any cards and gifts in a vintage suitcase embellished with lace and linen to create a traditional trousseau that you can enjoy looking back on for years to come. |

| Winter wonder |
 |
Warm rays of sunshine bring a smile to the face of many people, however, I have to confess that the colder months have always been my favourite. As autumn leaves in gorgeous, rich hues make way for frost and
snowflakes, I relish the opportunity to pile on cosy knitwear for long walks around historic city settings. It is with this in mind that we present our rundown of galleries and museums where you can host celebrations on page 25 - perfect for a spot of winter drama.
I have always imagined that my ideal wedding gown would incorporate vintage-style lace, and this season the intricate fabric is bang on trend. Whether you see yourself as an ice queen, a retro siren, or a cool and contemporary bride, there are plenty of dresses to tempt you in our bridal fashion feature on page 61.
Stationery is a key element of organising the big day, from save the dates to orders of service, pretty paper can set the tone for a fabulous occasion. Selecting a design that works for you can be tricky, so to help you enjoy the process we are showcasing some beautiful invites and favours on page 83.
Enjoy!

Love is in the air for one of this season's most romantic trends
The moment the nation switched on their televisions to see Catherine Middleton step out in her stunning Sarah Burton gown, bridalwear designers all around the world knew that lace would be a hit for 2012. The following month, they were already showcasing their own take on the trend, with many teaming butterfly, three-quarter-length or full-length lace sleeves with simple silk dupion or taffeta gowns.
And while designers such as Alan Hannah, Ian Stuart and Johanna Hehir have been experimenting with French Chantilly lace overlays, if an all-over lace gown isn't for you, another great way to incorporate this romantic trend into your look is in the form of a bolero or veil. The Vintage Wedding Dress company recently showed off some stunning accessories on the runway, with a selection of scalloped-edged veils and pretty lace sashes. |
