Stationery and favours can really set the tone for your wedding, so we've tracked down perfect paper and presents
Opening a wedding invitation is an exciting moment, so how do you make sure that your stationery announces the big day in style? We take a look at the essential pieces of paper that you need for your celebrations, from save the dates to thank you cards, with designs from local companies to inspire your selection. Fabulous favours can complement the notes for your nuptials, so we've also picked out some items that are sure to be a hit with your loved ones.
Top tips
- Many couples have specific requests for their wedding, be it a dress code or a policy on the attendance of children. This information should be provided within the invitations.
- If you think your guests will need directions to your ceremony or reception venue, or details of local accommodation, include any practical information they might need with the invitations, as well as the time the event is due to end.
- Ask guests to provide details of any special dietary requirements with their RSVP.
- If you intend to write out the invitations yourself, make sure that you order more than you need, just in case you have a momentary loss of concentration!
- If you employ a stationery designer, a proof should be sent to you prior to the final order so that you can check all the details are correct.
- You should expect your stationery to arrive around four weeks after placing the order, so make sure you allow yourself enough time.
- Favours should fit in with your theme and can make a nice addition to table decor.
- When choosing favours for younger guests, bear in mind that children will appreciate sweet treats or gifts that they can play with.

Sarah and Paul enjoyed a beautiful snow-bound wedding with an informal atmosphere at One Whitehall Place
Sarah Day and Paul Crouch experienced the most modern form of a whirlwind romance, one that began on an internet dating site. "Both of us were posted on MySingleFriend.com (MSF) for a bit of a laugh. I don't think either of us expected to meet our Mr or Mrs Right," confesses Sarah. "I thought Paul was gorgeous and he even had the initials PC, so he just had to be my Prince Charming!" Paul was just as enamoured with Sarah and set about organising a brilliant initial outing. "I was taken aback by how much fun Sarah seemed to be. I decided that the standard drink, cinema and meal was not going to cut it, so instead we went all around London on a series of mini adventures," recalls Paul.
The duo's shared enthusiasm led to a successful date and love soon blossomed. When it came to their engagement, Paul surprised Sarah with a trip to Venice on their one year anniversary. "Paul asked what sort of present I would like, to which I hinted 'one with a promise', though he had always told me the best kind of ring was a doughnut," says Sarah. "He led me to believe we were going camping for the weekend, but instead I was whisked off to Venice. Paul took me on another series of mini dates and gave me a book full of notes about the happy times we had spent together. He then went down on one knee and presented me with a knitted doughnut which he put on my finger, and when he took it away his grandma's engagement ring was underneath."

Autumn days
Q - Our wedding is set to take place next October in a converted barn. What colour combinations would you suggest for this time of year?
A - Dominique says: Barns have a rustic, old-world charm so you don't really need to do too much decorating as it can detract from the beauty of the building. I suggest simple colour combinations, perhaps in green and white, or why not give things an autumnal flavour with red, orange and yellow?
Try to base your colour choices on the flowers that are in season. Think about using agapanthus or ranunculus for your centrepieces and for impact hang giant pomanders from the ceiling.
Lighting can also add to the atmosphere of a celebration so I would place hurricane lamps around the space and strings of fairylights wrapped around the joists. It would look magical. |
