Kate and Rohit had the perfect day in the heart of Manchester.

Our real wedding couple Rohit and Kate met while working at Kettering Hospital in 2005. Rohit explains how he popped the question: "I took Kate away to The Pheasant Hotel in Harome, North Yorkshire, for a romantic birthday weekend," he says."She wasn't expecting to be taken away for her birthday let alone a proposal. After a romantic picnic, which I had pre-arranged, I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me."

The flowers were white and in keeping with the season, Kate says: "Sian from The Flower Lounge was really helpful with suggestions on what to include." On the day, the wedding party walked from the hotel to the town hall, luckily it didn't rain! "It was a train of people walking along the street starting with the father-of the-bride and Kate, followed by her five bridesmaids," adds Rohit.

Kate's most memorable part of the day was the guests' comedic determination trying to get the fire lanterns to launch. Rohit loved surprising everyone with a special DJ set.

Top tips
I'd love to be a dab hand with a camera. However, I really am no photographer and even the most basic point and click digital is beyond my mastering; the results rarely make it off the camera, let alone into a picture frame. So it was with interest that I read the tips on page 93 explaining how to make the most of wildlife photography while on honeymoon.

But this hasn't been the only revelation for me this issue, thanks to Lisa Morgan's wine guide. While I do enjoy a glass of dry white, I'm no sommelier and it's certainly given me more idea about choosing wine to complement food. If you're about to embark on the tricky task of finding the perfect wedding tipple, I recommend checking out page 70.

Happy planning

Mick Cookson Photography is a Manchester-based company, specialising in wedding and editorial photography. Rapidly becoming one of the most sought-after photographers in the North West, Mick meets every client personally, and oversees every aspect of the wedding photography and album design for the big day.

"I only photograph around 30 weddings per year, making sure that every client has a professional and high quality service," says Mick, "and as a company, we stick to this so that our high standards are maintained. Rarely do I photograph two weddings per weekend, so I'm always fresh and prepared for the day."

Mick shoots in an unobtrusive, documentary style. No shots are set up allowing the day to flow naturally with no cheesy, time-consuming poses, no mad sloping horizons, and definitely no Reservoir Dogs groomsmen shots. "After the ceremony, the couple and I go walkabout for around 15 minutes, to chill out and have some fun. Again, I let the couples do what they want - dance, sing, or just stand head to-head, quietly refl ecting on the day. I do very little to intervene, which, I guess, is why I'm hired."

It's all fun & games!

It's all fun & games!

Pleasing guests of all ages is hard to do. Be inspired by our fun ideas.

It's always a tricky subject: do you or do you not invite children to the wedding day? It really is a personal preference and either way you shouldn't feel pressured to make a decision to please others. But, if you do invite the little ones, be sure to provide entertainment to keep them occupied throughout the day - you don't want any tantrums halfway through the speeches.

Call in the professionals

A sure safe way of coping with the children is to hire a professional crèche company. Fiona Atkinson of Tinies Crèches says, "Experienced and trained staff can transform any room or area into a fantastic crèche, which is fun, stimulating, and safe. Tinies ensure that the programme delivery is varied and age specific (for up to 10-year-olds) to avoid boredom." Fiona adds, "Children can participate in group activities or play by themselves under supervision with a number of toys and activities. "From face painting and jewellery making to field games and fashion shows, children of all ages can enjoy these activities - plus all the toys they could wish for. This guarantees both the adults and children have a good time."

Fun and laughter

Clowns have been making children laugh for centuries, so what better way to keep them entertained at the wedding? Acts such as Pop up Polly, a female clown from Cheshire, can provide preschool and nursery shows with the use of storytelling, counting games, colouring and rhymes. Plus fun modern games, with competitions for the older children. Also, kids love nothing more than to cover themselves in pen and paint, normally with scribbles and shapes when colouring at home. However, a professional children's face painter, could do just the trick - with half the mess.
