Romance through the ages

Romance through the ages

The 1920s, '30s and '40s graced us with so many fashion icons: Greta Garbo, Katherine Hepburn, Bette Davies, and Jean Harlow; all women who would go on to inspire some of today's biggest bridal designers, from the lavish frills of Ian Stuart to the country vintage designs of Claire Pettibone.
One thing is for sure though: anyone can wear a vintage-inspired design. If you picture yourself as a bit of a 1920s flapper girl on your wedding day, this look has an emphasis on women who have a slight, slender shape. The sleek gowns are shaped like tunics, and some have intricate detailing on a low-slung waist and panelled skirts. Brides looking to reflect the 1920s era should finish their look, just like couture designer Lindsay Fleming has, with pretty detailed headdresses adorned with feathers, and strings upon strings of pearls.

For more information on choosing the perfect vintage gown, see pages 48 - 50 of the current issue.

Five steps to the perfect seating plan

Five steps to the perfect seating plan

Your reception depends upon it, so get it right and make your celebrations unforgettable.

It's a difficult job at the best of times, but when your big day is just around the corner, putting together a seating plan for 50 or more guests can seem like mission impossible.
It's an important task, too; even if yours is a casual affair, letting guests choose their own seats could result in complete chaos.
I'm sorry to say that this is an area where wedding planners have no choice but to take a back seat: after all, you and your fiancé are the ones who know all of your guests and, most importantly, the family dynamics. But don't fret - County Wedding Magazines has put together a foolproof guide to getting your table plan done and dusted, so you can relax and enjoy the run-up to your big day.

For a step by step guide on creating the perfect seating plan for your big day, see pages 58 & 59 of the current issue.

Laura Smith and David Atherton were married on 14th November, 2009, and chose a gorgeous gold, cream and red colour scheme.

"We got on really well and never had any awkward conversation. It was like we had known each other for years," explains Laura who met Dave four years ago in a bar. Dave popped the question when the couple was on their first holiday in the Lake District in 2008. He presented Laura with a ring while on a boat in the middle of Lake Windermere.
It took the couple just over a year to organise the wedding, Laura had a helping hand from her mother and Dave joined in too. "The easiest thing to organise was the suits for the groomsmen - surprisingly the bridesmaids' dresses were the trickiest thing to arrange," she says. "I really enjoyed the planning and I miss those Saturday mornings sat in Costa drinking coffee with mum and dad."
One of the reasons the couple chose St Helen's United Reformed Church was because Laura and her family are all involved with the church. "My parents were married there and my nan has attended the services for 92 years."
The reception was held at the Worsley Marriott Hotel. Laura says: "We have mini-breaks at the Marriott a lot and we wanted our wedding day there as we knew we would be looked after. The staff were very supportive and helpful throughout."

Laura shares all the details of their big day in the first issue of Your Manchester Wedding magazine out now!

They say love is sweet so what better way to evoke the sentiment than in your wedding theme? Laura Binder looks at candy colour schemes.

With spring upon us I can't help but think of pretty pastel tones for wedding days. But, to stand out from the crowd, why not add a tasty touch to the season's colours with a candy twist?
Couples can stick well within budget by creating economical yet eye-catching centrepieces: large glass bowls or tall jars filled with retro treats like flying saucers, sherbet lemons, marshmallows and lollipops look devastatingly sweet and tables can be named after them too. Indulging in all things candy is also a great option for those with children on the guest list, and works just as well for adults - after all, who doesn't have a taste for old school treats?

For more information on how to create the perfect candy colour scheme, see page 70 of the current issue.

Choosing the wedding photography will be one of the first things to do when planning the big day. To relieve brides of this big and often daunting task, we've teamed up with photographer Anna Jaël McMullan, to offer readers this great wedding photography package, worth £1,150.
Anna's style of photography is a mixture of contemporary, candid and formal, for both weddings and portraiture and the photography style can be tailored to suit the couple and their needs.
On the day, Anna's working method is relaxed, unobtrusive and observant, and when the day is over the wedding pictures can be displayed in both traditional and storybook style albums.
"I appreciate I am an important part of the couple's day," says Anna, "and my main role, I believe, is to observe and capture the special moments without getting in the way of the couple and the guests' enjoyment."
